Welcome to AWS! Before you can explore its powerful features, you need to create an account. Think of this as signing up for your very own digital toolbox, giving you access to a vast array of services that can help you build, deploy, and manage projects in the cloud.

In this lesson, you’ll set up a new AWS account, configure security settings, and take your first steps in navigating the AWS Management Console.

Step 1: Creating a New AWS Account

1. Start the Signup Process

1. Open your web browser and go to aws.amazon.com.
2. Click on the “Create an AWS Account” button in the top-right corner.

2. Enter Your Details

1. Email Address: Enter a valid email address that you can access easily.
2. Account Name: Choose a descriptive name for your account (e.g., “John’s AWS Lab”).
3. Password: Create a strong password with at least 8 characters, including letters, numbers, and special symbols.

3. Choose the Account Type

• Select Personal Account (unless you’re creating this for a company).

4. Add Payment Information

1. Enter your credit or debit card details.
   • AWS requires payment information to activate the account, but you won’t be charged unless you exceed Free Tier limits.
2. AWS will perform a temporary $1 charge to verify your card, which will be refunded.

5. Identity Verification

1. Enter your phone number.
2. Complete the verification process by entering the one-time PIN (OTP) sent to your phone.

6. Choose a Support Plan

• Select the Basic Support (Free) plan. This is sufficient for most users starting out.

7. Complete the Setup

• Once your account is created, AWS will send you a confirmation email. Click the link in the email to activate your account.

Step 2: Securing Your Account

Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

1. Log In:
   • Go to the AWS Management Console and log in using your email and password.
2. Access Security Settings:
   • Click your account name in the top-right corner and select Security Credentials.
3. Set Up MFA:
   • Under the Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) section, click Activate MFA.
   • Choose Virtual MFA Device.
   • Scan the QR code using an authenticator app (e.g., Google Authenticator or Authy).
   • Enter the two OTPs generated by the app to complete the setup.

Step 3: Logging In to the AWS Management Console

Your First Login

1. Navigate to AWS Management Console.
2. Enter your email and password, and complete MFA authentication if enabled.
3. You’re now in the AWS Management Console, your central hub for managing AWS resources.

Explore the Home Page

• Search Bar: Use this to quickly find AWS services.
• Dashboard Widgets: Access shortcuts to recently used services, billing info, and tutorials.

1. In the Search Bar, type EC2 and click on it.
2. Explore the EC2 dashboard to see what’s available.

Task 2: Customize Your Dashboard

1. Scroll to the bottom of the AWS Console Home Page and click Customize.
2. Add widgets like AWS Free Tier Usage, Recent Services, and AWS Health.

Task 3: Explore the Free Tier

1. Go to the AWS Free Tier page.
2. Review the Free Tier services and identify ones you’d like to try, such as EC2 or S3.
